Dear Betsy is a pocket size manual to help caregivers and individuals navigate the challenges of living with mental illness.
“Dear Betsy,
My daughter has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She is 22 years old and living at home.”
Perhaps you know someone who is experiencing symptoms of mental illness. A loved one is suffering, and you are desperate to help, but you don’t know how. Nowhere to turn, isolated and alone because of stigma, you feel like you are walking through darkness with no light in sight. Betsy is reaching out to offer you HOPE! This book is a consolidation of 73 advice columns that Betsy wrote for her local newspaper about mental illness. The questions posed to Betsy were heart wrenching—people who are affected by mental illness are desperate to share their struggle with an empathetic ear. This book offers information, support, and reputable resources all in one place with the assurance that YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
Betsy Johnstone was raising a family and teaching music in Washington DC in 1996 when her world came crashing down. Her son experienced severe onset of bipolar disorder at age 13. When the storm began to calm nearly a decade later, Betsy began to advocate for families affected by mental illness. In 2011, when she and her husband moved back to Edenton, her hometown in NC, Betsy helped establish a local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness to raise awareness and support families living with mental illness. In 2017, Betsy was recognized by the CIT (Crisis Intervention Team) International Conference in Fort Lauderdale as the Advocate of the Year for her leadership in trainings for law enforcement across eastern NC. Later that same year, Betsy received the Humanitarian Award from the Edenton Chamber of Commerce. From 2016-2018, Betsy wrote an advice column about mental illness for her local newspaper. The community responded by giving her a steady feed of questions. Readers used to tell her they cut the columns out and saved them each week…just in case. Betsy hopes this book will offer some light and hope to individuals everywhere living with mental illness.
All across Eastern North Carolina, Betsy Johnstone opened eyes and started conversations about the issue of mental illness. As head of Chowan County's chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, she led conferences that humanized and shed light on these underserved folks -- what they need and what we can do to help. Betsy' bravery to write about this subject has helped many people and enlightened caregivers and law enforcement.
